Redeemables gateway

Alongside the default redemption path described in How redemption works, Cardigan can integrate with Shopify's redeemables gateway instead.

How it differs

The default path represents an external card to Shopify as a native gift card, and redemption then behaves like any other gift card payment.

The redeemables gateway takes a different route, plugging into Shopify's payment flows as a gateway in its own right. That makes for a deeper, more native integration with the checkout, since the external card is presented to Shopify as a payment method rather than being represented as a gift card.

Subject to transaction fees

Because this approach operates as a payment gateway, redemptions made through it attract gateway transaction fees - a percentage of the amount redeemed, charged to you as the merchant.

The default redemption path does not.

Choosing between them

There is currently no functional reason to prefer one over the other. Both support the same redemption behaviour, and the default path remains available to every merchant.
